Why people who work for themselves need a different calculator
A regular paycheck arrives with taxes already taken out. Gig and creator income does not. You owe self-employment tax of 15.3% on most of your net profit, plus income tax, and you usually pay it in four estimated payments a year. Gas, car wear and equipment are your own expenses. Ignoring any of this makes a job look better than it is.
How we keep the numbers right
- Every yearly figure (brackets, standard deduction, Social Security wage base, mileage rate) comes from the IRS or Social Security Administration and is listed on our methodology page.
- The calculations run in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to us or stored.
- We publish the date the figures were last verified on every page, and we correct mistakes when readers report them.
These tools give estimates, not tax advice. See our disclaimer.
